Ten minutes of sitting still sounds like the opposite of getting ready for a show. But across several decades and hundreds of randomised trials, meditation research has converged on a consistent set of findings, not about relaxation as a feeling, but about measurable changes in the nervous system, the brain's attention circuitry, and the body's stress chemistry.
Below is what the evidence actually shows. Then, what it means for a career spent under lights, eight shows a week, opening nights, and a body that has to hold up for decades, not one season.
Pooled results across dozens of randomised trials show meditation produces a small-to-moderate, statistically dependable drop in cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone. The effect is strongest first thing in the morning, and largest in people already under sustained pressure.

"Meditation" covers genuinely different practices, aimed at different states. Sitting in a chair doing box breathing and lying down doing a 40-minute body scan are both meditation, and they do different jobs. Here are five worth knowing, and what each is actually for.
The base practice most others build on: sitting with attention anchored on the breath, and gently returning it each time it wanders. This is the practice behind most of the cortisol, attention and sleep research earlier on this page. Five to ten minutes is enough to start, consistency matters more than session length.
Best for: building the core attentional skill everything else relies on.Developed by Dutch athlete Wim Hof, this combines a specific cyclic breathing pattern, controlled hyperventilation followed by breath retention, with cold exposure and focus training. It's active and physiologically intense, not calming. A widely cited 2014 study found practitioners could consciously influence their autonomic nervous system and immune response, triggering an anti-inflammatory reaction typically considered involuntary.

Best for: performers with matinees or early calls. Even five minutes before the day starts can set the baseline the rest of the day builds on.Practiced before sleep, usually slower and more body-focused than morning practice, often body scans or breath-counting rather than active attention training. Best for: coming down from a show. The difference between a mind still running the performance and a mind actually able to rest.Most of the research above wasn't run on performers specifically. Auditions, first previews, opening night, closing night, performers live inside repeated high-stakes moments most people only face once. A lower baseline stress response means each new high-pressure night doesn't stack on top of stress the body never discharged from the last one.
Research on professional musicians puts the prevalence of performance anxiety somewhere between one in six and three in five. Mindfulness-based practice is one of the most consistently studied non-drug interventions shown to help.
