Heat and cold aren't opposites in a recovery routine. They're two ends of the same argument the evidence keeps making.
Sauna, ice bath and steam room have a long history as ritual and relaxation. What's newer is a real evidence base behind them, cardiovascular studies tracking thousands of people over decades, sports-science meta-analyses on muscle soreness, and neurochemistry research on what cold actually does to mood and focus.
The three modalities aren't interchangeable. Here's what the evidence shows, modality by modality, and then what it means for a body that has to perform again tomorrow night.
In the long-running Finnish KIHD cohort study, men who used a sauna four to seven times a week had roughly half the rate of fatal cardiovascular events compared with those who used one once a week, tracked over two decades. Sauna raises heart rate and cardiac output in ways that resemble a moderate bout of exercise.

Almost none of this research was conducted on performers specifically, it comes from athletes and cardiac cohorts. But the recovering muscle doesn't know the difference between a training block and an eight-show week. Here's the direct line from the evidence to the job.
A matinee and an evening performance leave a narrow recovery window. A short cold immersion between shows is one of the better-evidenced ways to blunt soreness before the curtain goes up again, timed for recovery, not for a training session.
For singers, steam's clearest advantage, hydrating and easing the airway, is directly relevant to sustaining tone across a demanding week. Many working singers steam regularly in the hour before a show for this reason: warm, humid air ahead of curtain keeps the vocal folds hydrated and the airway open, rather than trying to recover an already-strained voice afterward.
The alertness research on cold immersion, a real, hours-long lift in focus without the crash of caffeine, makes it a reasonable pre-matinee tool for performers who need to be sharp early in the day.
The Finnish cohort data on sauna and long-term cardiovascular risk matters most for performers thinking in years and decades, not single seasons.
The biggest mistake is using ice immersion right after strength training aimed at building capacity, the evidence is fairly clear that this blunts the adaptation you were training for. Save the plunge for after the show, not after the gym session that's building the strength to get through it.
